History/Personality
“Founded”. in 1638 by Sweden and Finland, Delaware was originally named New Sweden. These years were not easy for Michael but they were still some of his happiest. This happiness was to be short lived and in the year 1664 he was claimed by England The powerful nation changed his name to Delaware. He also changed Michael’s last name as it had no equivalent in his language, unlike the name Michael.
The young Michael was deeply troubled by these events early in his life. For a long time the mere thought of this imperial country gave him nightmares. As he aged his fear of England lessened, but his has been unable to fully banish the idea of a monstrous England. He has never come face to face with the country since.
These events also distanced him from the two countries whom were his parents. He tries his best to stay in contact but with their homes millions of miles away and work at home tedious and unrelenting, it is difficult to do this. Despite this, his relationship with the both of them is still good.
England put him under the wing of Pennsylvania, one of his other colonies. Pennsylvania and Delaware had tentative, but stable relationship for well over 100 years. In the year 1787 he saw an opportunity to take his fate into his own hands. Delaware became independent when he was the first state to ratify the constitution and thus became the first state.
After the revolutionary war things quieted down and everything went well for the state after that. This was until the events leading up to and including the civil war. As with most states during this war he was seriously affected by this turn of the events. The location of his home required that he be a border state and he had a hard time coming to terms with this enforcement. It was the only time in his history where he was divided in his loyalties concerning America. In some respects, his home reflected the conflict itself.
After the war he passes by in relative obscurity mostly associating with the states closest to him. His main dealings with others are business related, having a business friendly policy that attracted big corporations. His tax-free shopping is also a major attraction to his neighbors, who often stop by to take advantage of this.
One of his few close friends is the state of New Jersey. He is a good friend, and understanding of Delaware somewhat timid behavior. They often visit each other, although it is usually New Jersey who initiates these get-togethers.
He considers himself to be the Canada of the states as he is often forgotten about. Because of this he earned the not so endearing nickname “Dela-Where?”, but being the peaceable guy he is he does not let it bother him. Has a bit of a wild streak in him, but most people don't realize this due to his usually quiet and polite attitude.
Michaels typical attitude towards other is one of caution outside of business related activates, which he is superbly skilled at. It is social interaction which he has had little experience. Being such a small state he often passes under the radar of most people and over the decades and centuries has learned to be alone most of the time. Unfortunately it also means that he has become a bit wary of others, not knowing much about them himself.
Another unfortunate side affect of his somewhat isolated life is he tends a bit towards the melancholy. He sometimes feels that he is the most pathetic state especially when he considers some of his state symbols which include his state bird...a chicken... his state bug...a ladybug, his state colors blue and buff... (Now come on, Buff? It doesn’t get much lamer than that!!)...and to top it all off, his state beverage...milk.
For the most part though he does all he can not to fall into this trap, and does all he can to stay positive and to become a more confidant state.
